My name is Ian Douglas-Moore. I work with sound.
This blog is to document an independent study undertaken in Spring 2022 with Professor Johanna Devaney in the course of my work towards an MFA in Sonic Arts at Brooklyn College.
I’ve long been intrigued by the possibilities of the spoken voice in music-making, how it can move between music and speech, sense and sound, tangibility and abstraction. While working on some compositions for voice and electronics I had the desire to better understand what the voice does and how, and what kinds of information can be extracted and utilized from it.
In addition to suggesting analysis methods that can bring to light different aspects of vocal sounds, Prof. Devaney encouraged me to familiarize myself with the programming language Python, which has powerful tools for analyzing and processing audio.
